Spare Me!

Spare me the depression
Of pretend peoples’ lives
On the TV this Christmas.
Real life can bite
When you least expect it,
Who wants extra melodrama?

I hate to break the news
But these people are not real:
No-one’s really drunk,
No-one’s overdosed,
No-one’s left home
And no-one’s died.
It’s pretend. Period.

For some,
These things are real
And seemingly inescapable,
Happiness totally unattainable.
Engage emotions with the script,
Mood plummets
And before you know it
You’ll be reaching for the bottle.

Spare me the misery –
Screen some happy shows
This Christmas,
Show witness to the good
Things in life,
Raise spirits of a different kind
And remind us
Of the good in Christmas.
