Loss & Gain

2017 was not entirely kind,
These images come to mind:

Swimming wearing Mam’s cross,
Hoping not to suffer it’s loss
As I run across the beach-too-hot
From towel to towel in a tango-trot
Dancing through palm-tree debris
To dive into the sea;
Losing my sister so suddenly
Pulled the rug from under me,
Just as I thought the year was done
My sister left us far too young,
Followed by my Aunty Glo
Which only added to our woe.

Having friends and family
Spending time with me,
Navigating uncharted waters
With these soul-restorers
And learning to swim
In the depths I found myself in.

Celebrating my son’s Master’s Degree
In mollecular-biology,
Filled with joy for my
Curly-headed, blue-eyed boy,
Then employment by the university,
I thank God you didn’t join the army!
Celebrating my daughter’s career move
Getting into the Teacher groove –
The perfect job for my songbird,
Tune them up and make them heard –
Let your baton twirl and spin
Teaching school-children to sing!

Celebratory decision to retire early
Before the job consumed me wholly,
Finding my chiahuahua Kit
And absolutely loving it,
Such uncensored love and loyalty
Has filled my life most joyously.

This year has been bitter-sweet,
Hoping the next will bring a treat.
