Sleepless Narcotic

In the dark of the night when sleep evades
My soul cries out in prayer,
My mind wanders and then, I’m there –
Flitting between past, present and future:
Past hurts re-emerge,
Present issues intersperse,
Future possible disasters loom large.
Sleep gets further and further away,
Prayer becomes disorientated, chaotic;
I’m high on a sleepless narcotic.

I wonder how You make sense of this prayer,
Yet the real wonder is that You do
Because You are You.
Anxiety-ridden dreams invade my prayer
Until reaching breaking point
I turn to what never disappoints:
‘The Lord is My Shepherd’.
Wide awake I hold onto Your promises,
Reciting aloud in the quiet of the night
Slowly travelling from darkness to light.

I imagine Your oil pouring over my head,
Oozing slowly downwards which serves
To sooth my frazzled nerves,
Calming my over-stressed brain,
Leading me to quiet water,
Soon I feel physically calmer
And know that I am cherished.
Dreams and worries begin to slip away,
Anxiety and stress take a backseat
And I finally begin to drift to sleep.

12 months on: I Know

IMG_0687

Your cross around my neck
Has soothed my soul:
This past year,
I’ve held it in prayer,
And slowly adapted
Without you.
Walking into your room
I feel your presence;
Unseen, for now,
‘Though you’ve never left
And we were blessed,
I know.

I pictured you there
When we moved home,
Pleased for us:
Flags waving,
Cheerfully embracing,
Selfish, I know.
By the grace of God
You’ll watch from above,
Fully healed,
Running free
And though we can’t see;
I know.

Praise & Sing!

Winding Mountain Road

Can you praise in sadness,
Can you sing in faith,
When the road twists and turns
And your arms burn
From holding on?
Can you sing in sadness,
Can you praise in faith,
When your mood is low
And the tears flow
Down your face?

You can praise in sadness,
You can sing in faith,
You will come though
Your God walks with you
And will never leave.
You can sing in sadness,
You can praise in faith,
One set of footprints
When you couldn’t
Walk alone.

You can sing in sadness,
You can praise in faith,
You are never alone,
He hears your groans
And carries you.
Sing in faith! Praise in sadness!
God loves your brokenness,
As part of your wholeness –
Praise and sing
No matter what life brings.

The Easter Door

IMG_0622

Awesome! Magnificent God-become-man!
Ultimate guardian
Of the doorway to heaven.
Choosing not to remain
Veiled in the mist,
Descending to earth
With an aim to die,
To be crucified.

Astounding! Incredible God!
Creator of seen and unseen,
Of all that is and has been,
All that will ever be.
You came to earth,
Died to set all free;
The veil torn in two
Because of You.

Breathtaking! Mind-blowing God!
You died yet live forevermore,
Proving death foreswore,
So all may enter the door.
In exchange for Your life,
For all to be free,
Through resurrection,
You gifted redemption.

Majestic! Over-whelming God!
You take our breath away
Recalling the day
You were heard to say
‘It is done’.
All scripture complete in You,
Heaven awaits:
You opened the door,
Only You we adore.

Wretched Death

IMG_0625

Clouds gather,
Shadows fall,
As Christ of the heavens
Dies once and for all:

Flagellum whipped,
Divinity denied,
Stripped and bloody,
Immortal God of Deicide.
Wrists nailed to patibulum,
Hoisted high on the stipes,
A crude seat, the sedulum,
Knees bent, feet nailed at the front.
Lifting up to breathe,
Slumping down in pain,
Suffocating slowly,
Torture preordained.

Weak from blood loss,
Held tight by strong nails,
Jesus suffered and died,
Sin weighed in his scales.
He did this for me,
How does it make me feel?
I can’t understand it,
Can’t absorb his ordeal.
Clouds gather,
Shadows fall,
As Christ of the heavens
Opens heaven for all.

Lent 2017: Power in Weakness

IMG_0616

You taught humility
In the face of defeat,
God-become-man on a Palestine street.
You had the power to end it
There and then,
To throw away the last ditch plan
Yet you went ahead,
You took the strife
To give us everlasting life.

Having power and not using it
Is a strength that confounds me,
Laying down your life for free,
A noble, humble sacrifice,
God-became-man, hung on a cross,
Man’s gain, heaven’s loss.
Crucifixion the only plan:
Humility and grace packaged as one
Power in weakness for everyone.

Lent 2017: Choice

IMG_0615

In Your pursuit to share truth
You ignored dress and status,
Spoke with the proud and the anxious,
Used parables and miracles
To dispell long-held beliefs,
Held people spell-bound with your voice
Yet still left people with a choice.

A gentle approach,
Few dramatics for the cynics,
The whole time already knowing
How the story would end:
What kind of man would willingly
Choose to die excrutiatingly?

We live knowing You knew the end
Before we grasped the beginning,
You put Your plan in action
Asking nothing in advance
For Your life and death dance,
And despite all that You do,
You still leave us to choose.
