Lent 2017: Choice

IMG_0615

In Your pursuit to share truth
You ignored dress and status,
Spoke with the proud and the anxious,
Used parables and miracles
To dispell long-held beliefs,
Held people spell-bound with your voice
Yet still left people with a choice.

A gentle approach,
Few dramatics for the cynics,
The whole time already knowing
How the story would end:
What kind of man would willingly
Choose to die excrutiatingly?

We live knowing You knew the end
Before we grasped the beginning,
You put Your plan in action
Asking nothing in advance
For Your life and death dance,
And despite all that You do,
You still leave us to choose.

Lent 2017: Grace Conquers

IMG_0611

In the depth of the night
When sleep evades,
I feel small, alone,
Totally and utterly insignificant in the universe,
I think only the worst.
Who am I that You are mindful of me?
I cannot comprehend
Why You should care for me;
You created everything,
I am nothing –

I am of no significance
In the scheme of things,
An infinitesimal spec in the aeons of time.
Yet You tell me that I matter,
Your grace conquers.
You continue to pour out your love
Throughout the night,
Quietly comforting my fears,
Your magnanimity astounds me,
Truly.

Psalm 8:4 ‘What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them.’

Lent 2017: Social Blindness

IMG_0608

We are called to serve,
To be of use in society
And bring Christ to others.
We may be
The only Christ that people see,
Social blindness
Inhibits human kindness.

Become more socially aware,
Learn to share,
Share your voice, your hands, your time,
Look around, use your eyes:
Have patience with the lonely lady at the till,
Speak to the old man ambling up the hill.
Smile at the group of bored teenagers,
Pass the time of day with them,
They’re not a different species
Just ‘cos they wear hoodies.
Speak to the homeless by the shop door
Offer kind words to warm their bedroom floor

It could be you or I
Who needs a stranger’s touch,
Is it really so hard
To offer human kindness,
To realign life’s compass?
Be kind,
Not blind.

Lent 2017: Sacrifice

IMG_0607

What greater tribute
Than sacrifice
Could have been made
By God above
To show His love
For man?
When we were far off
He met us where we were,
Atoned for our sins,
Past, present and future,
His death the suture
Of love.

I live in continual amazement
At His sacrifice.
Greater love has no man
Than to lay down his life for another,
He was no man yet I am his brother.
Tied by invisible bonds
I bow before Him,
Acknowlede His superiority,
He does not see
My inferiority
And so deemed me worthy.

Lent 2017: God is Good

img_0601

God works for the best in us,
Moulding us to serve,
Subtlety changing us,
Growing loving hearts and minds
And reminds us that his love endures forever.
God is overwhelmingly gracious –
He endowed us with free will:
God provides, man decides.

Without faith we suffer the vagaries
Of indecision, politics and all the
Forces that work against us.
Faith gives us a benchmark,
Independent of worldly considerations
And its limitations.

God is good,
He has loved us from the beginning,
Never wavering,
In his astounding steadfastness.

He will love us to the end,
Forever and ever, Amen.

‘I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’

Lent 2017: Trying

img_0600

I’ll try again,
Even though based on past attempts
I may not succeed,
I still have this need
To prove myself.

Doing something new
Seems to be the current vogue,
But denial is the tougher challenge.
HOW WILL I MANAGE
Without wine gums, toffees, chocolate or any other sweets?
This is not to be entered into lightly or half-heartedly.
So, Lent is twofold:
Denial concentrates the mind
While the modified diet is more kind to me.

As I focus on the grace bestowed
On me because Christ died,
Grace that I cannot earn,
Grace that I cannot ever repay,
I will examine in what ways
I can pay this debit forward.
If I can sow a seed of doubt against unbelief
I will count it as a triumph
And with God’s grace, spend the rest of my life trying.

2 Corinthians 2:14 – ‘But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere.’

Tornado

Disconcertingly,
The rug is pulled from beneath your feet:
Life seems bittersweet.
Bewilderingly,
You’re upside down, sucked
Into the path of a tornado
Where you’re forced to go
Round and round,
Until you’re so dizzy you can’t think,
Or sleep
And every decision is too deep.

Life’s like that,
Ticking over nicely
Then …
Bam … it all begins to unravel
As you try to grapple
With the unfathomable.
