Ashes to Ashes

My darling Dad,

Part of me goes with you and

A part of you remains with me –

You will always be

My big man,

My fixer,

The lifter of my spirits.

Nothing can ever be the same

Though life will go on

And sweep me with it

Because it must.

I miss your hugs,

Your smiling face,

Your voice on the phone

But I won’t be alone

Because your love

Continues to encompass me.

Rest now

And smile,

I’ll see you again

In a little while.

All my love,

Ang xxx

Father(less) Day

Dad

How to manage Father’s Day
When you can’t send a card
Or a bottle of wine,
There’s no twinkly eyes
Or a jokey punchline,
No gravelly greeting
As you come downstairs,
Emotional overload
In his empty chair.
We have to accept
The things we can’t change
But Father’s Day without Dad
Is eerily strange.
Throughout the years
He gave so much love
So while I’m below
And he’s up above
I’ll feel grateful today
That I was his daughter,
I was so lucky –
No Father’s Day pauper.
His spirit lives on
Right here in his home
His love tangible
In the words of this poem.

Dedicated to Ron Cook
20/08/1928 – 02/06/2021

Alone

Alone,

You hung naked

And torn,

Whipped and scorned

And in that moment –

Between heaven and earth,

Truly alone;

More so than I can ever be –

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

You had to bear

The pain and agony

To offer us eternity;

Almighty God,

As Jesus Christ,

A man who died

In game-plan mode,

A God whose love just overflowed.

Patience

Pandemic slow-down, life in rebound,
Slow-motion days
While minds play;
Racing, restless, shamelessly demanding
Answers to prayer that do not come.

Patience.
Two syllablesof irksomeness
Revving the brain-squall of fractiousness,
The caffeine-fuelled maddness of life.
Patience.
Annoyingly, it cannot be said fast,
In any accent, it’s pregnant with pause,
A purposeful word.
Patience.

Enforced quietude, life in solitude,
Time for prayer, not despair;
Ardently, purposefully, in undemanding faith,
In Spirit-led strength of hope,
Pray – and peace will come.

Patience.

New Year’s Eve 2020

The sorrows of this year
Are due some tears,
We’ve loved and lost,
Suffered unbearable pain
Watching a virus
Seemingly unconstrained.
So much untimely death
Brought into our homes:
The victims, the heros,
Politicians blamed,
Conspiracies abound
Facebook experts declaim.
A year to forget –
2020 – be gone!
We need to feed our hope,
To be consoled,
To plan for a future
Regain temporal control;
To be normal again
Without the ‘new’,
For simple things,
A hug and a kiss,
Human touch –
The things we miss.

Here’s to next year,
It has to be better,
So throw off the old
Take hold of the new,
Look forward again
And May God be with you.

NoZoom@TheInn

May you and yours be safe and close
This Christmas Day,
Tell how much you value them
In your life today.
This year is different from every
Christmas past,
People missing, traditions broken,
Plans hastily redraft.
Yet hope abounds in darkest times,
You’ll see it if you try –
It’s family quiz on Zoom or Skype,
Or dropping shopping supplies,
Bin men dressed as Santa
With Rudolph running by,
Insta-cards, on-line advent,
Homeless warm and dry.

Focus on the positives,
The things you still can do:
Bring out the Monopoly,
Play a game or two!
Celebrate the weird presents,
Drink the Sherry dry,
Leave no cheese to be unturned,
The Ritz are nearby.
Grit your teeth and smile awhile,
Kids creating noise,
Prancing, dancing round the room,
Squealing at new toys,
Sugar-highs from chocolate mice,
Liquorice lace and candy joys,
But kids are kids at Christmas time
So in all the noise, rejoice!

Pop outside to take a break,
The night is clear and bright,
The Bethlehem Star is shining
To show God’s love tonight,
This same star once hung
Above an inn with no Zoom
God came down to be with man
‘Though none could find him room;
The only people present
Were the poor as God live-streamed,
No iPhone to record the birth
As angel armies beamed,
No auto-text en-masse to man
No Instagram no Story dreamed,
Just FaceTime original,
God, with man, revealed.

John 1 : 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Rainbow 🌈 Faith

Pandemic-days,
Dark times,
Battling for survival,
Awaiting revival
In time of drought;
Scorching winds
Scourge the earth –
Fear and panic
The new narcotic,
And yet,
And yet –
Hope persists,
Rainbow faith
Shining manifest
Into brokenness,
A kaleidoscope
Of hopefulness,
Myriad colours
Reflecting absolute love,
Inextinguishable
In the darkness
Because our God walks with us,
Always.

Duracell Bunny

It’s my Duracell bunny’s
Birthday today
And physically
He’s doing OK –
He’s still got his hair
Though it’s thinning on top,
His teeth’s his own,
His energy’s high
And the cataract was just the one eye,
The battery’s running
As good as new
And while he’d never
Admit to needing a rest
It is a test
To stay awake before bed,
But then again
He’s up with the lark
And still embarks
On a project a day
Because, well, that’s his way!
He’s not doing so bad
This man of mine
And today he’s SIXTY
Which I can’t quite believe
But I’m pleased
To say after 34 years
Of married life
He couldn’t have found
A better wife!

Let’s raise a glass
Because life’s been good –

Happy Birthday dear bunny,
Hope you find my ode funny!

Easter Praise

Praises sing
To Christ my King,
Hallelujah, You’re alive!

Death holds no fears,
Your promises
Hold fast and eternally last
Beyond our time or age,
Bound only by faith
And belief in me
As someone who could be.
You’ve shown the way
To beyond today
To more than we can see,
Your love for me,
Unconditionally,
Stretches every day,
Reminding me
You died for me,
You live for me to be.

Pharisee Fall Guy

0F41F22C-C2E7-4B37-A443-1F6352015C0E
Trumped up trial
For the King of Kings,
Guilty by presence
Whilst presenced with man;
Jesus, my minuteman.
No deceit within,
Yet tried by lies,
Pronounced guilty,
You walked to slaughter
To make me your daughter.

You took all the bad
To make today good;
Pharisee fall guy
Faced down the cross,
Stretched by nails,
Crowned by thorns,
Mocked and jeered,
Scourged and scorned,
Betrayed by treason,
Dignified, beyond all reason.

Crude nails held fast,
Powerful powerlessness
Displayed to the last.
You drowned in plain sight
Turning day into night,
The cross of shame
Shamed the men of God
As You paved the way
To turn death into life;
Jesus, my sacrifice.
