My shadow
Can’t be parted
From my side:
Lies beside me
Every night.
Snuggled down
Atop my bed,
My pseudo-baby
Wriggles and wriggles,
Pushing ever higher
To reach her goal
Of head on my pillow,
Nose in my face
In a doggy embrace.
I feel her
Stepping carefully
Between limbs
Changing her spot
Reverently, quietly,
Never disturbing me:
This girl is just perfect.
Whenever I wake
Whether early or late,
She will be waiting
For me to move,
Never waking me,
Just adoringly,
Next to me.

Does heaven do dogs?
I wish I knew,
I’d build a canoe
For Kitty and me
‘Cos she likes to be
Right by my side,
She’d enjoy the ride,
Paddling together
All the way,
A week and a day,
To the narrow gate
Where St. Peter stands
With keys in hand,
A cup of tea for me and
A treat for my doggy!

Kitty has two modes of being:
Flight or fright!
It’s quite a sight
To see her freeze on the floor
When minutes before
She was trotting along
On a morning sniff-a-thon,
Then, it’s head down, bum up,
Totally immobile:
Meeting an over-friendly dog
Looking for a quick snog.
Or, a noisy juggernaut rolls by
And she tries to run away
From the cacophony
Causing her disharmony,
She might have little legs
But boy can she run!
To Kitty, everything is danger,
Everyone’s a stranger!
My chihuahua is utterly devoted,
Totally paranoid,
My love struck mini-humanoid.

Kitty and me
We share fleas,
She snores as she sleeps
And she wriggles round a lot,
She howls if she’s left
And she pees in my veggie plot!
She hides in my shopping bag
To fool nasty coffee staff
And bites naughty children
Just to give her Dad a laugh!
She’s loving and loyal
And eager to please us all,
Eats special chihuahua food,
Drinks no alcohol,
Takes me out walking
But doesn’t like the rain a woof
Needs a Mac and wellies
To make her waterproof!
I love this cwtchy
Long-haired little girlie
Fleas are irrelevant
‘Cos she loves unconditionally!!

The gorgeous Kitty is settling nicely and after a worrying 24hrs has decided to eat! Now just got to persuade her to drink! Love her to bits already, a fitting retirement gift to myself . So lovely to find just the rescue dog I wanted
I’m so excited because
I finally have a little dog of my own
After waiting 30 years while working for a living!
We chose you Kit,
You are simply gorgeous and when you come
Out of your shell you’ll love us too.
You entered our home and heart today,
Slipped out of your travel crate
Cautiously and slowly,
Turning your head away,
Looking cute in your brand spanking new pink collar.
One tiny step at a time you came out,
Walked towards me and I was lost
In your enormous soulful eyes.
Your refusal to eat or drink worries me
But Dr. Google tells me it’s normal
And not to worry yet.
Five hours later and you’ve jumped
Onto the sofa and into my lap,
I’m in heaven!
Still not drinking
But you’ve walked inquisitively round the garden,
Scared yourself silly at the life-size plastic pigs,
Walked warily up to the large resin tortoise in amongst the herbs
And ran away from the roosting pigeons!
And so to bed. Your crate in my room.
Hope you can settle to sleep.
Welcome home little Kit.
We love you already.

The dark shadow stretches out by the fire,
Comatose in the comforting heat,
Soaking in it like a warm bath,
Making thoughts of moving obsolete;
Snores deeply, twitches now and then,
Yawns lazily and goes to sleep again.
We talk and move around,
Go in and out the door,
He doesn’t stir, stays motionless,
Fast asleep on the floor.
Tiredly, he’ll stroll up for a cwtch,
Lift his paws high up on my lap
And slowly slide down as I stroke
Him gently on the side of his neck.
Hector the hound dog loves to sleep
Dark as coal and just as deep.
