Raining Blessings

We bring you greetings
From the land of the web-footed
Umbrella-headed people,
We who have evolved to breathe
Rain instead of air;
Whose daily prayer
Is ‘Give us this day
Our daily shower’,
We carefully, pick the hour
To walk bare-headed,
Crouched over through
Wind and sideways rain
Searching for the first skein,
The promise of a rainbow
Spinning across the skies,
Lifting our head and our eyes.

This rain is our benediction,
Poured out abundantly
From an ever-gracious God,
Blessing us continuously
And conspicuously;
But what joy there is
When the mizzle-misted hills
Emerge through the sunshine –
Umbrellas closing,
Water-proofs away,
Impatiently on standby,
Awaiting another rainy day,
Another chance for God to say,
This is my country
And I will show my love
Raining blessings from above.

“When life gives you lemons …”

Missing You 😘

962F2D1A-D040-471F-8C34-7CAD476E5F77

We’ve travelled home
To bring you flowers
On this Mother’s Day,
Though to see your face
Would be the best bouquet.
We can’t hug or kiss you
But mothers up in heaven
Are loved more not less,
They know we miss them,
Remember, we were blessed.

There is a heavenly portal
Mothers can look through:
From glory’s height
To earthly flowers
Just to enjoy the sight.
Mother’s Day is tough
Without a Mam to share
Today our grief’s undressed,
Tomorrow will be better,
Remember, we were blessed.

Home Fire

Wood stacked by the fire,
Candles on the hearth
Create shadows that evoke stories,
Childhood memories:
The rattling of the poker,
Curtains closed, dinner cooking,
Fire-grazing, head in a book.
Warmth encircles the room
Promoting lethargy and insouciance,
A floatation chamber between two worlds
Recreating the past in the present.
I am comfortable.
I am home.
