Tonight’s curry was hotter
But I’m not sure why:
I use the same recipe
The same amount of chilli
Yet my eyes are watering,
My sinus’s cleared
My tongue is singed and
My tastebuds stripped
Of feeling!

The wood-stove is lit
And the heating’s on high,
My hot flushes are back,
I’m having an attack,
I’m heated from
From inside to out-
Maybe next week
I’ll search the books
And we’ll take a look at
Baked Alaska!

Impossible Love

A Lention reflection –

He who died for us
Dies for us still,
He who was still for us
Is still with us today,
Our life today,
Made possible,
By an act impossible
To explain rationally,
For no rationale,
Explains the greater love
That loves enough to die:

An impossible love,
A love that died
Yet remains alive.
Today and every day,
Pray, because

The Message – Romans 8:35-39

‘’Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture ….. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.’’

 

Victim

Lord, it hurts,
Really hurts
To see Thomas
In a wheelchair,
He’s just eight
And fate
Is claiming
A victim –
Has taken
His mobility
Already.
Time.
Lord, I’m begging for more,
Leave the door
Open a while longer
Let him walk, and run
Climb, have fun,
Be the child he should be,
Indefinitely.

Emasculated Dragon

Welsh Tourist Board take note!  The left hand sign shows a real dragon!!

Poor pathetic excuse for a dragon,
An artistic impression, no doubt –
Looks like he’s suffered a drought!
“Impossible” you say,
With the rain in Wales
But have you seen the poor dab –
Shrunken and withered without
His magnificent head
Or his mighty wings and not a claw in sight,
You’d drive right past him at night!

Symbols have meaning
But this one has none,
Oh dear, oh dear, what have you done?
An emasculated dragon,
A shadowful wraith
Who’s lost more than he’s won,
Put our dragon back on patrol:
Let’s remind one and all
By flying him high on our signs with pride,
This is the land where dragons reside!

I have always loved waving to the dragon on my visits home but this new sign, which has been there a good while, has finally made me crack! This poor representation is to be found as you approach Monmouth – Bring back a real dragon!

Angel Wings

Thomas isn’t fading,
He’s growing angel wings,
He’ll fly up high across the sky
To infinity, and beyond!
Rub between his shoulders
To feel a bony growth,
Angel wings are growing,
They’ll grow and spread
Right over his head
To guard him from the world.

Thomas isn’t dying,
He’s growing angel wings,
He’s just a child being denied
Opportunities we’ve been given.
While life is brutally cruel,
Only child-like innocence
Can grow such precious wings,
The power of flight
Is within his sight
Despite his failing vision.

Thomas will go flying,
Around the sun and moon,
He’ll see things from angel wings
But we’ll be left behind.
We will feel bereft
But Thomas will be living,
In a different time and space,
Where fears of the present
Are ceded to the heavens
Where Thomas will reside.

Thomas isn’t dying,

Karate Kid

A child,
He’s just a child.
A little blue-eyed boy
Who loves lego and Star Wars,
Harry Potter and karate.
Just a normal kid:
Pride of his parents,
Wonderfully loving big brother.
Now roles reversed as younger
Sister moves things out of his way
To prevent him stumbling as
Disease affects his sight.
Soon it will take more –
An inevitable forward momentum.
Pray still for a miracle,
Believe in the impossible
From the God of possibilities.

Re-evaluate,

Cerebral AdrenalLeukoDystrophy
Is a dreadful disease
So please, Lord, please,
Explain why it exists,
Why it strikes guiltless children
And why it chose our beautiful, bright boy,
Full of innocence, light and joy.
This is so hard to understand,
We cry out in despair
Because there is nowhere
To hide the fact that
No treatment can mitigate
The effects or the progress,
No treatment to reverse the process.

Disbelief. Denial. Shock.
Robbed of his future
By a genetic abuser,
His parent’s precious child,
Cursed by research failure.
How can this be?
How cruel is life’s reality.
Give them strength Lord,
It’s so incredibly unjust,
Help them face what they must.
We should be able to protect
Our little ones more than this.
As they see their boy fade away,
Help them cope day by day.

Loss & Gain

2017 was not entirely kind,
These images come to mind:

Swimming wearing Mam’s cross,
Hoping not to suffer it’s loss
As I run across the beach-too-hot
From towel to towel in a tango-trot
Dancing through palm-tree debris
To dive into the sea;
Losing my sister so suddenly
Pulled the rug from under me,
Just as I thought the year was done
My sister left us far too young,
Followed by my Aunty Glo
Which only added to our woe.

Having friends and family
Spending time with me,
Navigating uncharted waters
With these soul-restorers
And learning to swim
In the depths I found myself in.

Celebrating my son’s Master’s Degree
In mollecular-biology,
Filled with joy for my
Curly-headed, blue-eyed boy,
Then employment by the university,
I thank God you didn’t join the army!
Celebrating my daughter’s career move
Getting into the Teacher groove –
The perfect job for my songbird,
Tune them up and make them heard –
Let your baton twirl and spin
Teaching school-children to sing!

Celebratory decision to retire early
Before the job consumed me wholly,
Finding my chiahuahua Kit
And absolutely loving it,
Such uncensored love and loyalty
Has filled my life most joyously.

This year has been bitter-sweet,
Hoping the next will bring a treat.
