Lent 2017: Power in Weakness

IMG_0616

You taught humility
In the face of defeat,
God-become-man on a Palestine street.
You had the power to end it
There and then,
To throw away the last ditch plan
Yet you went ahead,
You took the strife
To give us everlasting life.

Having power and not using it
Is a strength that confounds me,
Laying down your life for free,
A noble, humble sacrifice,
God-became-man, hung on a cross,
Man’s gain, heaven’s loss.
Crucifixion the only plan:
Humility and grace packaged as one
Power in weakness for everyone.

2 Corinthians 12:9 ‘My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.’

Lent 2017: Choice

IMG_0615

In Your pursuit to share truth
You ignored dress and status,
Spoke with the proud and the anxious,
Used parables and miracles
To dispell long-held beliefs,
Held people spell-bound with your voice
Yet still left people with a choice.

A gentle approach,
Few dramatics for the cynics,
The whole time already knowing
How the story would end:
What kind of man would willingly
Choose to die excrutiatingly?

We live knowing You knew the end
Before we grasped the beginning,
You put Your plan in action
Asking nothing in advance
For Your life and death dance,
And despite all that You do,
You still leave us to choose.

Lent 2017: Prayer Power

IMG_0614

When I am low,
I turn to you for support
To get me through the bad days:
Never yet have you failed me.

Your promises are worth more than gold,
You are with me always
And worthy of praise.
Your love shines more than diamonds
Glittering in the sun,
I bathe in your glory
Transmitted through the power of prayer.
You know what I want to say
Even when I cannot articulate it
And your patience with me is astounding,
Prayer has no time limit
Nor any geographical boundaries,
There is no place where you are not,
Never yet have you failed to be with me
In any situation,
You are mine and I am yours,
To the end of time.

I will fear no evil, for Thou are with me.’

Lent 2017: Grace Conquers

IMG_0611

In the depth of the night
When sleep evades,
I feel small, alone,
Totally and utterly insignificant in the universe,
I think only the worst.
Who am I that You are mindful of me?
I cannot comprehend
Why You should care for me;
You created everything,
I am nothing –

I am of no significance
In the scheme of things,
An infinitesimal spec in the aeons of time.
Yet You tell me that I matter,
Your grace conquers.
You continue to pour out your love
Throughout the night,
Quietly comforting my fears,
Your magnanimity astounds me,
Truly.

Psalm 8:4 ‘What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them.’

Lent 2017: Social Blindness

IMG_0608

We are called to serve,
To be of use in society
And bring Christ to others.
We may be
The only Christ that people see,
Social blindness
Inhibits human kindness.

Become more socially aware,
Learn to share,
Share your voice, your hands, your time,
Look around, use your eyes:
Have patience with the lonely lady at the till,
Speak to the old man ambling up the hill.
Smile at the group of bored teenagers,
Pass the time of day with them,
They’re not a different species
Just ‘cos they wear hoodies.
Speak to the homeless by the shop door
Offer kind words to warm their bedroom floor

It could be you or I
Who needs a stranger’s touch,
Is it really so hard
To offer human kindness,
To realign life’s compass?
Be kind,
Not blind.

Lent 2017: Sacrifice

IMG_0607

What greater tribute
Than sacrifice
Could have been made
By God above
To show His love
For man?
When we were far off
He met us where we were,
Atoned for our sins,
Past, present and future,
His death the suture
Of love.

I live in continual amazement
At His sacrifice.
Greater love has no man
Than to lay down his life for another,
He was no man yet I am his brother.
Tied by invisible bonds
I bow before Him,
Acknowlede His superiority,
He does not see
My inferiority
And so deemed me worthy.

John 15:13 ‘Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’ friends’.

Lent 2017: Your Word

img_0606Help me Lord
To find the right balance
Between earthly saintliness
And practical usefulness.
Help me to listen to you,
To make time to rest in your word
And not just to be rushing around
For fear of running aground.

The seas are high,
The current of life is strong,
Strong enough to carry me astray,
Far from your pathway.
Your word is the chart
I need to follow,
It is a lamp for my feet:
You make me complete.

You will help me,
To ensure that I
Am neither useless nor too saintly
So that I can find my place.
You will help me,
Your word will guide me,
I will trust in you
Because your help is true.
