Lent 2017: Your Word

img_0606Help me Lord
To find the right balance
Between earthly saintliness
And practical usefulness.
Help me to listen to you,
To make time to rest in your word
And not just to be rushing around
For fear of running aground.

The seas are high,
The current of life is strong,
Strong enough to carry me astray,
Far from your pathway.
Your word is the chart
I need to follow,
It is a lamp for my feet:
You make me complete.

You will help me,
To ensure that I
Am neither useless nor too saintly
So that I can find my place.
You will help me,
Your word will guide me,
I will trust in you
Because your help is true.

Lent 2017: Do Not Be Afriad

img_0605

You are my strength and shield,
Always.
Who else can I turn to,
Who else would always be there for me?
In the depth of the night
When my brain is wide awake,
Thinking too deep,
Far too deep for sleep:
You are there,
Always.
When daytime worries
Constrain me,
Restrict my ability to think,
I drink
From your well:
You are there,
Always.

When I feel small and afraid,
When others put me down,
When my confidence slips:
You are there.
You knew me before I was born,
You will follow me all the days of my life,
You will lead me home:
You are there.

Always.

Joshua 1:19
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Lent 2017: Hope

img_0604

Your love surrounds me always;
In the darkness and uncertainty of life,
In the everyday strife,
I am held securely in the certainty of hope,
In the hopefullness of Your love,
In the loveliness of Your grace.
You hold my face in Your hands,
You look me in the eye and
Tell me I am loved, no matter what.
There are doubts and fears,
Indecision and apprehension,
Normal everyday tension,
But my prayer to You is a powerful
Release from the chains that bind me,
From the things that hold me back.
Over time, I can see You changing me,
Helping me trust You more honestly,
Thoroughly cleansing me
From all my troubles.
You, give me hope,
Help me cope
With what life throws at me.
Though I was far off, you met me
Where I was.

You give me hope,
Now and forever, Amen.

Lent 2017: Why Do This, For Me?

img_0603

How can I absorb the knowledge
That You died for me:
Slowly,
Painfully.
Was such action needed?
The sheer altruism,
Shocks,
Is unorthodox.
Why do this, for me?

Consider:
The emotion pouring out
From a God in pain,
His chest caving in,
Spilt blood creating a bridge
That no man can break.
Heaven and earth re-joined,
New life springing from death:
Two thousand years later
You set me free.

Why do this, for me?

Lent 2017: Sealed Bargain

img_0602

We brought you some daffodils,
Stepping irreverently across the rows
To bring you a yellow halo-bouquet
On Saint David’s Day.
A Lenten time of reflection
On family blessings,
Memories accentuated
By the flowery perfume of
A love filled childhood.

A mother’s love reflects
The power of love modelled
By Christ on the cross,
Which opened the heights of heaven,
A perfect, once only sealed bargain.

Lent 2017: God is Good

img_0601

God works for the best in us,
Moulding us to serve,
Subtlety changing us,
Growing loving hearts and minds
And reminds us that his love endures forever.
God is overwhelmingly gracious –
He endowed us with free will:
God provides, man decides.

Without faith we suffer the vagaries
Of indecision, politics and all the
Forces that work against us.
Faith gives us a benchmark,
Independent of worldly considerations
And its limitations.

God is good,
He has loved us from the beginning,
Never wavering,
In his astounding steadfastness.

He will love us to the end,
Forever and ever, Amen.

‘I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’

Lent 2017: Trying

img_0600

I’ll try again,
Even though based on past attempts
I may not succeed,
I still have this need
To prove myself.

Doing something new
Seems to be the current vogue,
But denial is the tougher challenge.
HOW WILL I MANAGE
Without wine gums, toffees, chocolate or any other sweets?
This is not to be entered into lightly or half-heartedly.
So, Lent is twofold:
Denial concentrates the mind
While the modified diet is more kind to me.

As I focus on the grace bestowed
On me because Christ died,
Grace that I cannot earn,
Grace that I cannot ever repay,
I will examine in what ways
I can pay this debit forward.
If I can sow a seed of doubt against unbelief
I will count it as a triumph
And with God’s grace, spend the rest of my life trying.
