Lent 2017: Prayer Power

IMG_0614

When I am low,
I turn to you for support
To get me through the bad days:
Never yet have you failed me.

Your promises are worth more than gold,
You are with me always
And worthy of praise.
Your love shines more than diamonds
Glittering in the sun,
I bathe in your glory
Transmitted through the power of prayer.
You know what I want to say
Even when I cannot articulate it
And your patience with me is astounding,
Prayer has no time limit
Nor any geographical boundaries,
There is no place where you are not,
Never yet have you failed to be with me
In any situation,
You are mine and I am yours,
To the end of time.

Psalm 23:4 ‘Yea, though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for Thou are with me.’

Lent 2017: Do Not Be Afriad

You are my strength and shield,
Always.
Who else can I turn to,
Who else would always be there for me?
In the depth of the night
When my brain is wide awake,
Thinking too deep,
Far too deep for sleep:
You are there,
Always.
When daytime worries
Constrain me,
Restrict my ability to think,
I drink
From your well:
You are there,
Always.

When I feel small and afraid,
When others put me down,
When my confidence slips:
You are there.
You knew me before I was born,
You will follow me all the days of my life,
You will lead me home:
You are there.

Always.

Joshua 1:19
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Beth Shalom

img_0599Crucially it tells the story
All should know but still must be told,
Of those who grew not old,
Who fled from fear and intolerance,
Or died horrendous living deaths
When life was cheap,
When no one dared weep.
Cry now as you see photos
And hear personal testimonies
Of truly horrendous stories,
But it won’t do any good –
Only the history exists,
The people are gone
In a hate-filled Armageddon.

Hope spreads from the telling
Of the threat of extremism,
The arrogance of racism,
Hope spreads far and wide
When truth is revealed
Of a time man destroyed man
In a man-made plan.
Danger emerges
In the quest for perfection
Perfected in destruction,
In wholesale death.
Far better to believe
That all are born equal,
Love thy neighbour,
Set not brother against brother.

Matthew 22:39
‘Thous shalt love thy neighbour as thyself’.

A Nottinghamshire village
Hosting a Shoah memorial.

Prayer for Peace

Quieten my mind,
Enfold me in your saving grace,
Take me someplace
Away from the stress
That life imposes.
I need your peace,
I crave your tranquility,
Your transforming divinity,
Removing the pressures I face.

Soothe my soul,
Keep me above the abyss
And grant me your peace.
Your grace embraces me,
Lifts me up on wings
To soar above everything
That weighs me down,
That keeps me earth-bound,
Shackled in doubt.

You go before me and behind,
Your love surrounds me,
Sustains me absolutely;
You are with me always.
You are my God
And I put my trust in you.

Quieten my mind,
Soothe my soul,
Grant me your peace.

Matthew 11:25-30 ‘Come unto me all ye who travail and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest’

Who Do I Ring?

Who do I ring?

When I can’t remember a birthday date
And fate decrees I’m far too late
To send a card now.
Who will show me yet again
How to repair a trouser tear and steer
Me through the process?

Who will update me on family news,
And choose the choicest bits to amuse
Our conversation?
Who will smile as I enter the room
And assume
I’m whom she expected?

I’ve kept her last voice message,
An emotional hostage,
To help me bridge the gap.
To hear her voice
And rejoice in her choice
Of conversation starter.

Now and then I bathe in her sound
As I’ve found grief rebounds
When it’s totally unexpected.
When I’m driving home in the dark and the rain
I’ll still ring you Mam,
Again and again.

1 Corinthians 13:11-12

Emptiness

Emptiness is tearing my heart apart:
A searing pain
Washes over me in waves
Causing a tsunami of emotions
As my brain processes
Your death.
How can someone just cease to exist?
You’ve always been there for me,
Always loved me no matter what
And now we speak only in my mind,
I see you only in photos that evoke memories
Of happy times gone by.
Will my memories be enough?
Will my future grandchildren come to love you too?
I’ve scanned photo after photo
Looking for you Mam
And you’re there, I see you,
But I can’t touch you.

Even though I know you’re safe,
Part of me is missing
And I will never be the same.
I hold to the promise
That I will see you again

1 Corinthians 13: 8-10

Do Not Worry

Do not worry,
Do not fret;
The Lord is with thee yet.
Life is tough,
You’ve had more than enough;
But do not fret, just yet.

Lean on your lifeline,
Your link to above;
The Lord is with thee yet.
Hold tight,
To God of comfort and might;
Do not worry, do not fret,
The Lord is with thee yet.

Love

Can you offer a prayer for a dying man,
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you, can
You stroke and hold his limpid hand,
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you can?

Can you remove fear at the point of death
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you, can
You ease his pain as he sighs his last breath
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you can?

Can you offer a prayer for his unchained soul,
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you, can
You rejoice for a soul that has returned home,
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you can?

Can you offer a prayer for a dying man,
Can you offer a prayer,
Can you can?
